HOT TIPS FOR YOUR DIY GREYWATER SYSTEM
We get a lot of questions about the greywater system and the aquifer pipe. From “What plants can use greywater system?” to “What kind of shampoo and detergent can you use with this system?”, here are six answers for your questions.
1) YOU CAN USE ANY SHAMPOO OR CONDITIONER
First, the shampoos and conditioners we use in the bath are fine for watering the landscape around you. The truth is, the additional phosphates which may be in the soaps will be eaten up by the microbes in your soil, and this will add to the luster of your lawn and plants.
2) YOU CAN USE MILD DETERGENTS
On the other hand, mild detergents are fine. Not only do they get into the fibers of your clothes and pull that dirt, but those same cleaning properties break the water tension in the soil. Thus this helps push the gray water out and make the water platform keep flowing underground.
3) YOU WANT TO USE SUBSURFACE OR MULCH BASIN
When you use a greywater system, the Aquifer Pipe sits under the soil. It spreads water into an 8 foot wide section. To clarify, if you have, for example, a 30 foot pipe, you will cover an area that is 8’ X 30’ (240 Square Feet).
Above all, this moisture zone ensures that your plants are going to be nicely saturated. The pipes we put in sit 12 inches underground. And this center channel is nice and thick, and keeps the mulch above, the soil moist, and the greenery lush.
4) YOU WANT TO FILTER YOUR WATER BEFORE DISTRIBUTING TO THE LANDSCAPE
Likewise, as we show on our website, you want to use a filter BEFORE you send the greywater to your landscape.
The water is going to be kind of murky and grey-ish in color, but that filter is going to take the larger traffic of lint and dirt and collect it. You want to replace the filter about every 3 months. It’s going to cost you only $1.50 and make your life easier to boot.
5) YOU CAN USE GREYWATER ON ANY LANDSCAPE
Yes, you can use the greywater on any landscape (plants, grass, trees). Consequently, we haven’t found a plant material that creates a problem with the greywater system. But we have tried ferns, palms, Bermuda grass, Augustine grass, you name it..
The greywater system works with all kinds of drought tolerant and native plants. In the same vein, it also works with winter plants. Your greens will love it, because you are feeding them every time you shower, bathe, or do laundry!
6) ENJOY YOUR LANDSCAPE!
In conclusion, most people don’t stop to enjoy their terrain enough. Make sure you sit and appreciate the lush world you are creating for your family and loved ones.
